Musings of A Wanderer is the first poetry collection of 94 poems by budding Indian Poet Shreya Chatterjee. she is bilingual and writes both in her native tongue Bengali and English. Shreya has meaningfully captured light moments with simplicity and brilliance combined with depth which I think is the best quality of the poet. This extremely reader friendly poetry anthology is full of simple poetry that clearly comes straight from the heart with lucid language.
For I write, what I see And speak of
Things I feel.
Thus “Musings of a Wanderer” Stand true to its name.
It is true Shreya’s Musings is the expression of true and genuine feelings.
Her final wail reverberated Though the quite homes Down the road-
Just like the constant hissing Of the perched earth.
Shreya is well conscious about hideous social mindset and talks about the plight of women in our society. Her social awareness is also reflected through many poems to quote one of them Lines of Revolt
Her Final wail reverberated Through the quite homes Down the road-
Just like the constant hissing Of the perched earth.
Loneliness, isolation, alienation, communication gap are some of the popular themes of modern poetry which are reflected in her poetry. Nature is portrayed in her poetry as a pious angel which makes her poetry ‘Romantic’ with optimistic attitude. Freedom reminds us of a caged bird desires to be free.
I Know Not why But I
Want to fly.
NO,
It’s not a song….
But a maiden wish…. I want to reach
Up to the stars
And fly off with clouds….
She talks of acquaintance of human being with nature which shows depth of her poetry. Her Monsoon poetry is the best example of being mystic as well as romantic. As she puts it ‘For monsoon is the season of love and affection… give it all the definitions that a man or a woman can think of … it falls short when one has to describe monsoon love.
No one needs the moon Nor the Blazing Sun Let the monsoon love Find its words.
Shreya’s sensitive poetic mind is powerful enough to portray the voice of women in her poetry her one of the best poem ‘Queen of our Land’ reads,
In want of male-heir
She bore the pain of nine-nine-nine months. When each time her likeliness was born She bore abuses without a word
Endured the merciless battering
And wiped off her tears on cold hungry nights… Yesterday a son was born.
I strongly recommend this collection of free verses to readers, scholars and academicians for its genuine poetic excellence.
